Important:
For your information, my induction is scheduled for Monday, April 21st. Assuming I don’t go into labor before then, my last day will be Thursday, April 17th. I hope you know how much I love and adore your children. They have been a true joy to teach and a blessing in my life this year. It is hard for me to walk away from them early. I can assure you they are in good hands with Mrs. Kendall. They have had her as a guest teacher many times throughout the year and I anticipate the transition to go very well. Please let me know if you have any questions. If you need to communicate with her, her current e-mail address is shaunakendall@hotmail.com.

Science
Our newest unit is all about Fabric. We are studying how we use fabric and the properties of fabric. We will be doing many science experiments as well as pulling apart and weaving together fabric of our own. Look for a journal of all our learning to come home in a few weeks. In the meantime, ask your students about the fabrics you see around your house!

Reading
We keep focusing on learning and using reading strategies to decode words and increase our fluency. We are all continuing to learn Kindergarten automatic words, and many of us are starting to practice 1st grade automatic words as well! Every day I see improvements in reading and I am so proud of these kids! They are getting ready for 1st grade all the time!

Math
We are continuing to become experts on teen numbers. We practice reading, writing, and building teen numbers. This week we talked a lot about how teen numbers are made of a group of 10 and some extras. We filled in many tens frames to show these numbers and wrote number sentences to match, such as: 10+6=16. We will continue to improve our knowledge of teen numbers by decomposing and composing numbers 11-20. Keep watching for math work mats to come home and review them with your child. This will solidify their knowledge for sure!

Writing
We have done a lot of writing during our recent social studies unit and our current science unit. We continue to work on 5 Star Sentences. This means we check each sentence for a capital, period, spaces, a who, and a what. It’s also important to include details in our stories and pictures to match what we wrote about. These kids are becoming such independent writers and have such great stories to share. I love reading their ideas.

Reading
This past week we started a unit called, “Children Long Ago.” We have been learning (and will continue to learn) about what it was like to like long ago. We compare how things are the same and different for us today and children who lived in the past. Our big question to answer is, “How did the change make life easier?” We have read books and studied about topics such as cooking and preparing food, toys, transportation, and electricity. Next week we will continue this unit and study about what it was like to go to school long ago.

Math
This week we have learned all about reading and writing teen numbers! We learned how to identify and build teen numbers and that the 1 always comes first in the tricky teens! Please help at home by quizzing your student on reading and writing teen numbers. Our next unit will focus on composing and decomposing teen numbers in different ways. It is important that the students have a good understanding of teen numbers.

Writing

This week we got brand new journals to use for writing! Hopefully you saw your child’s yellow journal come home. I hope you will take the time to read through it and see their progress over the Kindergarten year. We are continuing to work on 5 star sentences and adding details to our stories. We have done a lot of writing in our Children Long Ago unit to explain how things are different and the same.
